Cyrano de Bergerac

Alexis Michalik's film dramatizes a fictionalized creation of Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, following the blocked young playwright through casting Coquelin, rehearsal crises, creditors, producers, romance, and the 1897 premiere. Scenes and famous speeches from the finished play appear inside the movie, while Edmond's supposed private experiences are arranged as comic origins for characters and lines. It is not a retelling of Cyrano's seventeenth-century plot, but the play is both destination and active text. Clark's translation lets viewers read the complete work whose composition the film affectionately invents and distinguish historical artifact from backstage fantasy.
