Ihsan can’t speak, can’t remember, and moves like a soulless creature, so Ziya abandons him in Istanbul and flees. A wandering strongman named Vasili discovers the broken scholar, brings him into his troupe of outcasts, and treats him as one of their own. Surrounded by the circus’s strange affection, Ihsan’s memories begin to flicker back, his voice returns, and he regains a fragment of his former self.

The fragile peace shatters when the authorities storm the circus after a child unveils Ihsan’s monstrous face. The troupe scatters; Ihsan is forced to run again, this time taking shelter in a barn belonging to an old woman, Seher. There he meets Esma, a pregnant woman fleeing her own clan’s vengeance.
