In New York City, the hot-tempered gangster Joe Gallo roars into a theater, pulling a knife on a man who complains about his talking during the movie. The moment quickly spirals into a broader life of crime as he climbs into a car with his brother Richie, along with the fearless Jelly Jelly and the blunt-witted Mannie Mannie. Dressed in masks and armed, they stage a brutal mob assassination at a restaurant, a shocking debut that binds this crew with a shared code of loyalty and volatile temper.

That reckoning doesn’t end with the hit. The group is offended when their boss, Falco, refuses to invite them into his home for payment, doing little more than slipping them a meager $100 apiece. Enraged and emboldened, they crash through the gates of his stately lakeside mansion, taking Falco’s brother and several others prisoner as a show of force. At the center of the unfolding power struggle stands Don Vittorio, the head of all New York crime families, whose intervention tilts the balance and sets the stage for a harsher, more dangerous order.

The fallout continues as Falco’s health declines, dying inside an iron lung, while betrayal ripples through the ranks. Coletti Coletti seizes the opportunity to seize Falco’s operations, reshaping the landscape for years to come. Richie, meanwhile, battles a stomach ailment that weakens him further, and Joe lands behind bars. In prison, he befriends Willy Willy and helps spark a riot over the brutal, unjust conditions that cages many men—an experience that hardens Joe and widens his circle of influence. The story takes a sharp turn when Richie’s fate is sealed by illness and desperation, culminating in his suicide by driving a car off a cliff, leaving Joe to navigate a future without his closest ally.

Upon release, Joe returns to the woman who anchors his life, Anne Anne, and begins rebuilding a more expansive crime network with Willy and Harlem associates. The city starts to know him as “Crazy Joe,” a nickname that captures both his blistering temper and his knack for cultivating powerful, risky alliances that stretch beyond the initial crew. The rise is swift and unmistakable, as Joe braids personal loyalty with a growing appetite for dominance in a town where power often walks hand in hand with danger.

Yet the old scores refuse to stay buried. Joe confronts Coletti again, intent on righting the betrayals that paved his prison stretch. But Don Vittorio moves first, orchestrating Coletti’s assassination at a rally and casting Joe as the central suspect in the politically charged murder. Anne pleads with Joe to leave town, and Willy wrestles with the belief that his friend could still be innocent, even as the web tightens around them. Joe travels to Vittorio’s home to threaten the mob boss rather than strike a genuine partnership, a move that only hardens the antagonism between them and draws a more deadly line in the sand.

The climax unfolds at a tense restaurant scene where Joe, Anne, and Willy are present while the mob boss’s hit unfolds.
