Ending explained
How Cold (2023) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The climax of Cold Pursuit converges into a violent, chaotic showdown that decimates the ranks of both warring cartels. Nels Coxman, having kidnapped the son of drug lord Viking to draw him out, finds himself in the middle of a shootout between Viking’s men and the rival gang led by White Bull. Almost everyone perishes in the crossfire, leaving the two leaders and Nels as the last men standing. Nels manages to trap Viking using a logging machine, but rather than killing him himself, he steps back to let White Bull claim the final vengeance. White Bull executes Viking, settling the score for his own son's death, which effectively ends the gang war.
In a surprising turn of events, the film’s resolution is not one of continued violence between the survivors, but of quiet solidarity. Nels and White Bull, having both lost their sons to the same ruthless enemy, find a mutual understanding. They drive away together in Nels’s snowplow, two fathers bonded by tragedy rather than bloodlust. This ending subverts the typical action movie trope where the hero kills the main villain; instead, Nels steps aside, allowing someone with an equal claim to vengeance to finish the job, thereby forging a strange peace.
However, the film punctuates this moment of calm with one final, darkly ironic death. As Nels drives away with White Bull, the last surviving henchman, Avalanche, accidentally slips and falls into the path of the snowplow. This sudden, clumsy death reinforces the movie’s thematic focus on the absurdity of violence. It suggests that death is often random and senseless rather than cinematic or heroic. By surviving the bloodbath only to die by accident, the henchman's fate serves as a grim punchline, reminding the audience that in Cold Pursuit, death is never far away, even when the fighting stops. Nels returns to his job clearing the snow, having cleared the city of its criminals, but the road ahead remains uncertain.
