The ending of Chainsaw Man delivers a stunning, meta-twist that fundamentally rewrites the protagonist's existence. In the story's climactic moments, Denji meets a grim fate when insect Devils consume him before he can consummate his relationship with Yoru. This tragedy prompts Pochita, Denji's loyal chainsaw devil companion, to make a profound realization: Denji's life would have been better had Pochita never existed. In an act of ultimate self-sacrifice, Pochita erases himself from existence, causing time itself to rewind. The narrative then resets to the very beginning, recreating the events of the first chapter with one crucial difference—Power, the Blood Fiend, intervenes to save Denji from the Zombie Devil instead of Pochita.

This reset creates an entirely new reality. Denji and Power become Devil Hunters under the supervision of Nayuta, who has somehow replaced Makima in this altered timeline. In a poignant moment, Denji encounters Asa and saves her from a clumsy accident involving Bucky the Chicken Devil. When Asa calls him "Chainsaw Man," a flicker of recognition passes through Denji—he's holding a chainsaw, and something deep within him stirs, though the memory doesn't fully surface. The series concludes on a bittersweet note: Denji and Power head out to eat together, with Denji casting a wistful glance toward Asa, leaving readers with a sense of longing and unresolved connection.

The ending operates on multiple levels thematically. By wiping the slate clean, Pochita gives Denji a second chance at happiness, restoring his two most cherished relationships—with Power and Nayuta—while offering Asa an opportunity for friendship she never had in the original timeline. It's a bittersweet conclusion that suggests some things are better left undone, and that the erasure of trauma can itself be an act of love. However, the abrupt nature of this resolution leaves many threads dangling, and whether this serves as a satisfying finale or a frustrating cutoff depends largely on how much weight one places on the journey versus the destination. The ending feels both poetic in its selflessness and unearned in its execution, making for a finale that is as divisive as it is memorable.
