Albert Brown, a suburban teenager with dreams of being a rapper, idolizes the gangsta rappers he sees on television. He decides to form a rap group with his friends, Euripides and Otis, despite lacking the necessary connections and image.

To gain recognition, Albert and his friends approach local crime lord and nightclub owner Gusto, seeking a performance at his club. They hope that associating with him will elevate their status in the music world.

Their plans are abruptly disrupted when the police storm Gusto's club, leading to his arrest. Gusto mistakenly believes that Albert and his friends have betrayed him, igniting a dangerous rivalry.

Taking advantage of the chaos, Albert adopts a new persona as 'MC Gusto,' stepping into the criminal world. He encourages Euripides and Otis to take on the monikers 'Dead Mike' and 'Stab Master Arson,' allowing them to maintain their ruse.

The trio forms a hardcore gangsta rap group named CB4, falsely presenting themselves as ex-convicts. Their edgy image and music quickly attract the attention of music mogul Trustus Jones, marking the beginning of their ascent in the music industry.

CB4's fame skyrockets with provocative songs like 'Sweat from My Balls' and 'Straight Outta LoCash.' Their journey is documented by an up-and-coming director, capturing both their success and the chaos that surrounds it.

As CB4 gains popularity, they draw the ire of a local politician eager to shut them down for obscenity. This external pressure creates additional challenges for the group as they navigate their fabricated identities.

The group's dynamics begin to fracture as Dead Mike's relationship with his gold-digging girlfriend Sissy causes tension. Meanwhile, Albert's home life deteriorates due to his growing involvement in their deceptive lifestyle.

The real Gusto escapes from prison, seeking revenge against Albert for the perceived betrayal. He blackmails Albert into participating in a record store heist, threatening to expose his true identity.

As tensions rise, the group further disintegrates; Dead Mike immerses himself in Afrocentric rap while Stab Master Arson pursues a DJ career. Alone, Albert battles despair and addiction in the fallout of their fractured friendship.

Albert receives devastating news about Trustus, who has died tragically after choking in fear during a confrontation with Gusto. This loss serves as a turning point for Albert as he realizes the consequences of their choices.

Determined to free himself from Gusto’s control, Albert plans a sting operation. He tricks Sissy into seducing Gusto, then swaps places with her to capture him in a compromising situation for the police.

Having successfully trapped Gusto, Albert begins to reconcile with his true self. He reaches out to Mike and Stab Master Arson, encouraging them to reunite and lay their fabricated lives to rest.

Together, they embark on a triumphant comeback tour, reclaiming their musical identities and careers. The trio navigates the new world they've created, leading to newfound authenticity and success.
