Matt Devereaux builds a vast ranch and mining empire, ruling with iron authority. He raises his sons to share his fierce work ethic and ambition. The three older brothers—Ben, Mike, and Denny—feel neglected and treated more like hired help than family, planting seeds of resentment that simmer beneath the surface.

Joe is Matt's biracial son by his Native American wife, a status that complicates his standing with the townspeople and within the family. He loves his father and would do anything for him, often preferring long rides and time with his mother’s people. The dynamic sets the stage for conflict when parental affection seems unevenly distributed.

Joe's bond with his father begins to soften after his stepmother presses Matt to change his attitude toward Joe. Matt starts to converse with Joe more regularly, signaling a potential shift in their relationship. This subtle change is meaningful, as Joe’s loyalty and affection are acknowledged in small but important ways.

Meanwhile, the three older brothers push back against their father's dominance, feeling increasingly sidelined. During a raid of rustlers, Matt, Joe, two Indian workers, and the four accomplices clash with the middle brothers. Two of the four accomplices are killed in the confrontation. Joe pleads for leniency for his errant brothers, but Matt banishes them from the ranch, a decision that haunts him and tests the family.

Matt discovers that 40 head of cattle die after the mine on his land pollutes a water stream used for drinking and grazing. He leads a raid on the mine offices and confronts the director, demanding accountability. A court warrant is issued against those responsible, escalating the confrontation into legal trouble.

To spare his father further humiliation, Joe claims responsibility for the attack and is sentenced to three years in prison. The act seals Joe's fate and isolates him from the family during a period of crisis.

While Joe is away, Ben and the other brothers rebel fiercely, challenging Matt’s control over the ranch. The old man, overwhelmed by the rebellion and the strain, suffers a fatal stroke. The family begins to fracture under the weight of unresolved feuds.

Joe is permitted to attend his father’s funeral, and he formally severs ties with his brothers, proclaiming a blood feud. The moment marks a formal end to any reconciliation in the near term.

After serving his sentence, Joe returns to the ranch, where his mother, Señora, urges him to forget revenge and leave the country in search of peace. Her plea plants a potential path to reconciliation, if he chooses it.

Ben, fearing Joe’s return to seek vengeance, ambushes him on the ranch. Two Moons, the foreman, intervenes and shoots Ben dead to protect Joe's life. The act eliminates a direct threat and reshapes the remaining family dynamics.

Time passes and Joe, now married to Barbara, visits Matt's grave to reflect on the tragedy and the feud that nearly tore the family apart. The moment signals a personal pivot toward acceptance and memory rather than revenge.

At the grave, Joe notices the down-turned lance, the symbol of a blood feud, and deliberately breaks it in half to symbolize ending the cycle of vengeance. The act represents a final, symbolic reconciliation within the family and the community.
