In rural Nebraska, a young trans man named Brandon Teena navigates life with quiet resilience, seeking a place where he can be himself. The danger surrounding him deepens when a barroom altercation leads to Brando’s eviction from his cousin’s trailer, forcing him to seek a new start in Falls City.

There, Brandon forms new bonds with people who become central to his life. He befriends ex-convicts John Lotter and Tom Nissen, along with their circle, including Candace and Lana Tisdel. As Brandon and Lana grow closer, their romance unfolds with an earnest tenderness that catches both of them by surprise. They begin to dream of a future together, planning a move to Memphis so Brandon can help Lana launch her karaoke singing career. Their connection deepens as they share a kiss during a date night, marking a moment of hope in a world that has already shown its uglier sides. The relationship moves forward with warmth and mutual care, even as shadows from Brandon’s past loom large.

Yet the law and the community struggle to understand or protect him. Brimming with fear and confusion, the police detain Brandon on charges dating back to before his relocation. He is placed in the women’s section of Falls City’s jail, a decision that strains his relationships and tests the boundaries of trust. Lana comes to his aid, bailing him out and urging honesty, but Brandon’s attempt to explain his situation becomes a cruel test of love: he fabricates a cover story about being intersex and potential surgery, while Lana insists on loving him for who he is. The situation spirals into violence. Tom and John confront Brandon in a brutal display of power, dragging him into a car and driving him to a secluded location. In a harrowing confrontation, they strip away his privacy and dignity before Lana, who is present and distressed, cannot shield him from what unfolds. After this crushing encounter, Brandon escapes through a bathroom window, but the threat remains palpable.
