What Happens at the End of Beast?

How Beast (2018) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the climax of Beast, Nate and his family are stranded deep within the South African wilderness, hunted relentlessly by a brutal lion driven to madness by the loss of its pride and the cruelty inflicted by poachers. As they flee through the treacherous terrain, Nate desperately searches for a way to protect his daughter Mare, who has been severely injured. In a final confrontation, Nate lures the lion towards the pride of lions that Martin had raised and released into the wild. Knowing that these lions would see the beast as a threat and attack it to protect their territory, Nate hopes they will eliminate the danger once and for all. This plan works: the lion is killed by the defending pride, bringing an end to the nightmare for Nate and his family. Though the rescue comes with the loss of Martin, who sacrifices himself to save the others by setting himself on fire to distract the lion, the remaining family members—Nate, Mare, and Norah—survive. The film closes with Nate waking up in a hospital, grateful that his daughters are alive and hopeful for a new beginning, ready to repair his fractured relationship with Mare. The ending underscores themes of survival, sacrifice, and hope, as nature's deadly predator is ultimately defeated by the very animals it threatened to destroy. It also highlights how extreme circumstances can bring out both the worst and the best in people, and how hope persists even in the face of unimaginable danger.
