Set in 1940s Curaçao, the film follows black Surinamese painter Gabriel Goedbloed, who comes from Holland to create a Virgin Mary mural in a local church. As he selects the young Black teacher Ava to pose, the island’s colonial society reacts with intolerance, turning their artistic collaboration into a forbidden love saga.
