Zanussi calls the film his most autobiographical work. It follows a young boy in post‑World War II, Communist‑dominated Poland, whose father stayed in Britain after the war, leaving the family under suspicion by local Party officials. His mother sends him to Warsaw to live with an “aunt,” really an old family friend, where he must navigate the oppressive political climate and the changes in his family life.
