The film’s ending reveals that Ron’s perception of reality has been deeply distorted, with many of his confusions and delusions uncovering a darker truth. Throughout the story, Ron’s internal guilt and repression have manifested as the monstrous wolf, symbolizing his greed, guilt, and monstrous past actions. The real threat wasn’t just the physical wolf terrorizing the town but also Ron’s own haunted conscience. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Alma’s interactions with Ron were not entirely innocent; she had found him as a lost, drunken mess and led him into a web of guilt and regret. The scene where Ron finds Jack’s corpse behind a sheet in his house is the ultimate culmination of his suppressed guilt—his own murder of his son, driven by his obsessive desire for control and his inability to accept Jack’s choices.

In the climax, it’s revealed that the wolf isn’t an external creature but a symbolic representation of Ron’s own greed and darkness. When the police finally surround his home, Alma reveals herself to be part of the larger illusion, and Ron realizes that she was never truly separate from the town or his past. The confrontation with the wolf and Alma exposes Ron’s own culpability, culminating in his attempt to take his own life, overwhelmed by guilt and remorse. The final scene leaves viewers with the unresolved ambiguity of whether any of what transpired was real or just a manifestation of Ron’s fractured mind, ultimately emphasizing the story’s themes of guilt, repression, and the monstrous nature lurking within us all.
