A radio operator in New Mexico receives a bizarre signal from Roswell and vanishes while tracing its origin. Today, the same mysterious signal resurfaces, traced from the South Pole to the Falkland Islands and back to the United States. A satellite captures an unknown object sitting on Antarctic snow. The connection between the signals and the object points investigators toward a global threat.

Julian Rome, a cryptologist and UC Berkeley professor, is invited to investigate the mystery. He is sent to a remote Antarctic research base that houses a greenhouse where scientists study genetically modified plants. The assignment marks a shift from puzzle to urgent scientific investigation.
