What Happens in Aaraattu: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Aaraattu (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In the village of Muthalakotta, located in Palakkad, the community is gradually rebuilding its economy post the devastating 2018 floods. The residents are striving for self-sufficiency through various agricultural projects. Amidst this recovery, four young individuals and an elderly mentor arrive in the village during the chaos of the flood and extend their helping hand to the villagers. After the floodwaters recede, the group decides to remain in Muthalakotta, taking charge of a significant portion of the farming activities and establishing an ashram aimed at yoga and spiritual practices.

With the state government mandating that all vacant lands be converted to agricultural use, the villagers, alongside RDO officer Anjali (Shraddha Srinath), approach the richest man in the village, Edathala Mathai (Vijayaraghavan), to donate his 18-acre plot to the government. However, to prevent losing his valuable land and to develop it into a township by altering its designation, Mathai decides to lease the property to the cunning Neyyattinkara Gopan (Mohanlal). Gopan, under the pretense of fish farming, plans to level the land, yet his true intentions align with those of the villagers as he aids them in their agricultural pursuits, agitating Mathai in the process.

In retaliation, Mathai dispatches goons to intimidate Gopan. However, Gopan proves his strength by defeating them and subsequently uncovers Mathai's involvement in money laundering and hawala scams. The plot intensifies as Mathai's sons confront Sathyasheelan (Saikumar), the individual who introduced them to Gopan, uncovering an astonishing secret that Gopan's real identity is Colonel Suryachandra Lal, an officer from Military Intelligence. His past is traumatic, having lost his parents in a train incident caused by the Muthalakotta Battalion, comprised of the original four youths and their mentor, who are linked to several crimes.

Under false identities, the Muthalakotta Battalion hides in the village to evade capture. Following this revelation, the young men execute Sathyasheelan. Gopan orchestrates a significant event where none other than A. R. Rahman (A.R. Rahman) graces the occasion as the chief guest. In a dramatic turn of events, Gopan defeats the group and has them detained by the NIA. Tragically, a shootout ensues, culminating in the deaths of the youths and their mentor. Remarkably, a police officer later discloses that Gopan is not the true Suryachandra Lal, who is, in fact, receiving care for depression in a military hospital. The final twist reveals that Gopan is a highly skilled secret agent, codenamed Agent X, affiliated with the Central Home Department, and has undertaken numerous covert missions under varied identities throughout his career.

Aaraattu Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Aaraattu (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Neyyattinkara Gopan help the villagers after taking Edathala Mathai's land on lease?

Gopan's apparent agreement to level the land for fish farming is a cover. In Aaraattu, he is actually a covert operative who has infiltrated Muthalakotta to dismantle Mathai's corruption network. Helping the villagers aligns with his real mission to protect the community while gathering evidence against the land mafia operating from Andhra Pradesh.

Foreshadowing: Gopan's calm reaction to Mathai's goons hints that he is not a simple businessman but someone trained for combat.

Q2

Who are the Muthalakotta Battalion and why are they hiding in the village?

The Muthalakotta Battalion consists of the four young men and their elderly mentor (Guruji) who arrived during the 2018 floods. They are wanted criminals connected to several offenses, including a train incident that killed Gopan's parents. Under fake identities as yoga instructors and farmers, they have been hiding in the village to evade capture by authorities.

Foreshadowing: Their suspicious eagerness to settle permanently in a remote village right after a natural disaster is the first clue to their hidden identities.

Q3

Why does Edathala Mathai lease his 18-acre land to Gopan instead of donating it to the government?

When the state government mandates that all vacant land must be converted to agricultural use, Mathai faces losing his 18-acre plot if he keeps it idle. To retain control and convert the land into a profitable township, he leases it to Gopan under the pretense of fish farming, which he believes will level the land and clear the agricultural restriction.

Foreshadowing: Mathai's quick decision to approach a stranger from Neyyattinkara shows how desperate he is to avoid losing his property to the new policy.

How is Gopan connected to Colonel Suryachandra Lal from Military Intelligence?

Mathai's sons confront Sathyasheelan and learn that Gopan's real identity is Colonel Suryachandra Lal, an officer from Military Intelligence whose parents died in a train incident caused by the Muthalakotta Battalion. This connection explains Gopan's personal vendetta against the hidden criminals and his mission to bring them to justice.

Foreshadowing: The fact that a military background is later attached to Gopan is hinted at by his disciplined physicality and tactical reflexes during the goon attack.

Q5

Why do the four youngsters kill Sathyasheelan after learning Gopan's identity?

Sathyasheelan is the man who introduced Mathai's sons to Gopan and inadvertently exposed the Muthalakotta Battalion's location. The youths kill him to silence anyone who can connect them to the train incident and Colonel Suryachandra Lal's parents' death, protecting their own cover before Gopan can act on the information.

Foreshadowing: The youths' increasingly nervous behavior after Sathyasheelan begins meeting with Mathai's sons signals their fear of exposure.

Q6

Why does Gopan organize a public event with A. R. Rahman as the chief guest?

The grand event serves as a strategic trap in Aaraattu. By drawing the entire village, including the Muthalakotta Battalion, into a single public gathering, Gopan creates the perfect moment to expose and confront the hidden criminals. The celebrity appearance also reassures the villagers and presents Gopan as a legitimate community benefactor while he prepares to strike.

Foreshadowing: Gopan's insistence on staging a massive village celebration right after Sathyasheelan's death suggests he is luring the youths out of hiding.

Q7

How can Gopan be both Colonel Suryachandra Lal and a secret agent known as Agent X?

The final disclosure in Aaraattu reveals that Gopan is not actually Colonel Suryachandra Lal. The real Colonel is being cared for in a military hospital for depression. Gopan is Agent X, a high-ranking operative of the Central Home Department who has spent his career assuming multiple identities, including the Suryachandra Lal persona, to infiltrate criminal organizations like the Muthalakotta Battalion.

Foreshadowing: A police officer quietly questioning the Colonel's hospitalization foreshadows that the identity story is not as straightforward as it seemed.

After Gopan defeats the Muthalakotta Battalion and has them detained, the National Investigation Agency arrives to take custody of the wanted criminals linked to the train incident. A chaotic shootout breaks out during the handover, resulting in the deaths of the four youths and their mentor. The violence closes the chapter on their long evasion of justice.

Foreshadowing: The sudden arrival of central agencies immediately after Gopan's victory signals that the resolution will not be peaceful.

Q9

Why does Edathala Mathai turn against Gopan when he starts helping farmers?

Mathai leased the land expecting Gopan to level it for a future township project. When Gopan instead uses the land to support the villagers' agricultural efforts, Mathai's real estate plans collapse. His frustration, combined with Gopan's growing popularity, pushes Mathai to escalate by sending goons and later using his political connections against him.

Q10

How does Gopan uncover Mathai's money laundering and hawala operations?

During his time in Muthalakotta, Gopan uses his training as Agent X to investigate Mathai's financial dealings behind the land leasing. He traces illegal cash flows and hawala transactions tied to the real estate mafia from Andhra Pradesh, exposing how Mathai exploits land acquisition loopholes with help from local authorities.

His mission involves neutralizing the Muthalakotta Battalion responsible for the train incident that killed Colonel Suryachandra Lal's parents, while simultaneously breaking the land mafia's grip on the village.

Foreshadowing: Gopan's arrival coinciding with the battalion's presence and the land conflict is later revealed to be a calculated operation rather than coincidence.

Q12

Why does RDO officer Anjali approach Edathala Mathai to donate his land?

Under the state government's new mandate that all vacant land must be converted for agricultural use, Anjali is responsible for ensuring compliance in Muthalakotta. As the wealthiest landowner with an idle 18-acre plot, Mathai is the most logical target. Donating the land would support the village's recovery from the 2018 floods and align with the policy without forcing a seizure.

Foreshadowing: Anjali's polite but firm tone during the village meeting signals that government officials will not back down on the new agricultural mandate.
