A Thunder of Drums

In 1870, George Hamilton stars as Lt. Curtis McQuade, a young and inexperienced cavalry officer arriving at Fort Canby in Arizona. The fort, remote and understaffed, happens to be his birthplace, as he is the son of the then-post commander. Eager to prove himself, McQuade quickly finds himself at odds with Richard Boone, who plays Capt. Stephen Maddocks, a seasoned but somewhat embittered veteran of Indian conflicts. Maddocks, who served under McQuade’s father, is wise and experienced, but also skeptical of McQuade’s youthful confidence. Their initial interactions are marked by tension and disagreement, especially when Maddocks demonstrates to McQuade that the knowledge he gained in childhood about the West is inadequate for commanding troops in the actual field.

On the day of his arrival, McQuade witnesses the somber funeral of four soldiers from a patrol led by Lt. Porter. These troopers were ambushed and killed in a running fight with a large band of “hostiles” believed to be Comanches. They also return with a young girl, the sole survivor of a brutal attack on her family at a distant ranch, who is visibly traumatized. The funeral, filled with sorrow, casts a shadow over the otherwise lively visit of Luana Patten, who portrays Tracey Hamilton, a woman from the East soon to marry Maddocks’ second-in-command, Lt. Tom Gresham.

McQuade had a previous romantic connection with Tracey, and upon her arrival, he resumes their relationship, creating tension with Gresham, played by James Douglas. When Gresham departs on a patrol the next day, he discovers that Tracey and McQuade are involved, which sparks a heated confrontation. Gresham’s deviation from his orders to pursue hostile forces leads to a tragic outcome. McQuade and Maddocks, played by Richard Chamberlain, pursue Gresham’s group but find only their bodies after they are ambushed during bivouac. McQuade is deeply disturbed, fearing that his rekindled relationship may have compromised Gresham’s safety, but Maddocks remains pragmatic, condemning Gresham for allowing distractions to endanger the mission.

In response, Maddocks orders a strategic bait tactic, dividing his remaining troops and sending McQuade with a small contingent, including the wise Arthur O’Connell as Sgt. Karl Rodermill, to a nearby mesa to lure the enemy into an attack. This plan succeeds, but McQuade’s small force gets overwhelmed, leading to a fierce engagement where Maddocks arrives just in time to turn the tide. Tragically, Sgt. Rodermill is killed during the battle. Throughout the fight, McQuade learns that their foes are not Comanches but Apaches, a revelation Maddocks had anticipated, highlighting his skill in outthinking their opponents.

The climax emphasizes Maddocks’ belief in learning and adapting, as he remarks to McQuade that “they have to think like their enemies to beat them.” This experience marks a turning point in McQuade’s growth as an officer, revealing he begins to understand the complexities of leadership and combat. After the victory, McQuade returns to the fort only to find Tracey preparing to leave with the young girl to visit relatives in the East. She shares her tragic story of losing her own family to smallpox, and Maddocks gently consoles McQuade, saying, “Bachelors make the best soldiers because they have nothing to lose but their loneliness.”

This story not only showcases the harsh realities of frontier life but also explores themes of growth, pride, loss, and the importance of experience and adaptability in the face of danger. Throughout, the film emphasizes that true leadership requires both knowledge and the humility to learn from the harsh lessons of the wilderness, making it a compelling tale of resilience and personal transformation amidst the rugged landscape of the American West.
