A Letter for Evie (1946) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of A Letter for Evie (1946), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In the last months of World War II, New York City girl Evie O’Connor Marsha Hunt works as a secretary for the Trojan Shirt Co. in Brooklyn, a company that outfits the Army with uniform shirts. She has a clear goal: to marry a tall, strong man who can wear a Trojan shirt with a 16 1/2 neck, and she isn’t shy about pursuing it. With a hopeful heart, she pens a short letter and slips it into a shirt, imagining a future partner who embodies the strength she admires.

That shirt lands with Private Edgar “Wolf” Larson John Carroll, a man known for his charm and a reputation as a ladies’ man. He reads the letter aloud to his bunkmate, John Phineas McPherson Hume Cronyn, then discards it. John retrieves the note and feels a spark of interest in the woman behind the words. John, smaller in stature but keen in mind, decides to pursue Evie by writing back, even as the truth of his size and appearance weighs on him.

Evie and John become pen pals, though when she asks for a photo of him, he sends back a picture of Wolf to keep up the ruse. He worries that Evie will lose interest if she discovers that he does not measure up to the tall, strong image she imagines. As John’s unit passes through New York, he slips into Evie’s life in disguise, visiting her while posing as his own friend, Wolf. The chemistry is undeniable, and the couple enjoys a wonderful connection, yet the deception gnaws at John—what will happen if the truth ever comes out?

Wolf, unaware of the full depth of their correspondence, arrives and escorts Evie with a swagger that feels thrilling, but the romance lacks the sincerity that the letters carried. Evie is swept up by his eloquence, only to realize that the spark in person isn’t quite the same as the one in writing. Wolf explains that he can be articulate in letters but stumbles in spoken moments, leaving Evie to question what she truly desires.

A tense cascade of events follows. John tries to keep Wolf and Evie apart, even as Evie’s roommate Barney Lee [Pamela Britton]—a warm, flirtatious presence who is drawn to John—adds to the friction. In a heated moment, John pretends to be drunk to pull Wolf and Evie away from each other, but jealousy tears at the fragile balance between the two men and the woman they both care for.

Tensions erupt when John lashes out, striking Wolf outside Evie’s building and warning him to stay away from “his” girl. Wolf pays no heed and meets Evie again in secret, and John learns of their clandestine meetings when Wolf answers her phone. The situation spirals into danger, and John drives to Evie’s apartment building, where he creates a smoky distraction to smoke them out. Amid the chaos, Wolf trips and seriously injures his head, and, in a moment of vulnerability, asks Evie to marry him. She accepts, but the wedding is postponed because the unit must be shipped overseas the next morning.

In Europe, Wolf fulfills his duty and eventually marries a French girl, leaving John to face the truth and tell Evie what really happened. Evie has not heard from John for months, and a visit to his family in New York reveals startling clarity: the man who wrote the letters—and the man she had come to admire and love—was the same man she knows as Larson. Heartbroken, she returns home and confesses to her roommate that she can no longer pretend to know which man she truly loves—the one who kissed her share of romance or the man who poured his heart into his words.

Meanwhile, John, newly released from an Army hospital with a wounded leg, chooses a quiet path. He decides to protect both men’s honor and Evie’s faith by conveying that he is dead, gifting her the Purple Heart as a final, solitary testament of his enduring love. The gesture reveals the truth in a poignant, selfless way, and Evie realizes that the man who loves her—the one whose sacrifice mirrors the depth of his feelings—exists in the same person she loves. In the end, their longing converges, and they share a hopeful kiss, ready to face what comes next together.
