Biela, a modest farm‑girl who has spent her whole life on an isolated homestead, is sent to a nearby town to stay with her only family—cousins from a wealthy, bourgeois background. In the unfamiliar urban environment she struggles with the social customs, expectations and pace of city life, feeling alienated and torn between her simple upbringing and the pretensions of her relatives.
