A Girl Named Sooner

In the 1930s in Vevay, Indiana, Sooner is raised by Old Mam Hawes, a backwoods woman who earns a living making illegal moonshine. Hawes tries to formalize her guardianship to collect foster care funds, drawing scrutiny from the Sheriff. This arrangement places Sooner at constant risk of intervention and legal trouble.

Sooner is taken in by the childless Mac and Elizabeth McHenry, who hope a child will help Elizabeth emerge from her depression. Elizabeth bonds with Sooner and Sooner is enrolled in the local school. The new guardianship marks a hopeful change from Hawes's life.

Sooner looks forward to attending school and, after a bumpy start, becomes comfortable there. She forms tentative connections with other students under the McHenrys' care. The school setting highlights Sooner's desire to belong.

Sooner brings home her pet bird to show the class and friends. The children and Sooner taunt the bird to fly, and the animal dies. Elizabeth is horrified when she discovers the dead bird.

The next morning Elizabeth drives out to Hawes' cabin to find Sooner missing, while Hawes berates Elizabeth for being a better guardian than she is. Months pass as the McHenrys struggle with the loss of Sooner. Sooner remains with Hawes, who talks of moving to Florida where it's warm year-round. The uneasy arrangement persists as Hawes remains Sooner's primary guardian.

With the annual fair looming, Hawes learns state inspectors will be present and she will not be able to sell whiskey there. She sends Jim Seevey away in anger and orders Sooner to hitch the old horse William to the cart to take the whiskey to the fair herself. The moment underscores Hawes's stubborn dependence on bootlegging.

Sooner attends the fair; Hawes gives Sooner money for the first time. Sooner buys cotton candy while Elizabeth buys more food for her. They ride the Ferris wheel together, and Sooner becomes ill from the ride.

Back at the cart, William dies from the strain of the heavy load. Mac tends to the horse, and Sooner acknowledges that William died, just as the bird did earlier. The double loss underscores the consequences of Hawes's choices.

The Sheriff arrives and threatens to remove Old Mam Hawes from the area. Hawes declares she may move to Florida, while the Sheriff seems eager to see that happen. The guardianship conflict reaches a fever pitch.

Hawes orders Sooner to stay with the McHenrys, but she lingers and looks back as she walks away. The moment signals lingering attachment and unresolved ties between Sooner, Hawes, and the McHenrys.
