Ending explained
How Father (2019) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The film’s conclusion strips away the disorienting subjective perspective to reveal a heartbreaking truth: Anthony is not living in his own apartment, nor is he being cared for by his daughter. Instead, the final setting is an assisted living facility where his primary caregiver is a nurse named Catherine. The characters we watched shift and change throughout the narrative—sometimes appearing as strangers, sometimes as family—were projections of Anthony’s fractured mind trying to make sense of his surroundings. By the end, his grip on the timeline and the identities of those around him has completely unraveled, leaving him adrift in a reality he cannot recognize.
In the climactic scene, Anthony experiences a profound regression, crying out for his mother and dissolving into a state of infantile vulnerability. He poignantly describes his condition to Catherine, saying he feels as though he is "losing all his leaves." This metaphor serves as the emotional core of the film; just as a tree is stripped bare in winter, Anthony feels his identity, memories, and connections to the world falling away until nothing is left. The nurse offers a grim reassurance, telling him that his condition will soon make him forget this specific moment of suffering, a small mercy in the face of such total loss.
The camera does not linger on Anthony’s despair, however. Instead, it drifts away from him, moving out the window to observe the trees outside, whose leaves are rustling in the wind. This final shot provides a subtle, devastating contrast to Anthony's internal monologue. While he feels barren and lost, the world outside continues in a natural, indifferent cycle. The leaves on the trees remain, suggesting that while Anthony’s personal world is fading, life itself persists. It is a haunting final image that reframes the story not just as a tragedy of memory loss, but as a meditation on the disintegration of the self, leaving the audience with a lingering sense of sadness for a man who can no longer hold onto the branches of his own life.
