731 (2025) Ending Explained – Final Scene & Meaning

In the film’s climax, Yongzhang Wang finally puts his plan into motion. Pretending to be the legendary resistance fighter Ziyang Wang, he convinces the other prisoners that a night‑time escape is possible. As they make their move, the Japanese guards unleash a cloud of plague‑infected vermin onto the fleeing crowd. The desperate rush turns into a massacre: gunfire erupts, half of the inmates are cut down, and the survivors scramble into a deep pit in the ground, hoping the earth will hide them.

The pit offers only a fleeting reprieve. The Japanese discover the hideout, open fire again, and the remaining prisoners are killed one by one. Wang himself manages to climb out of the pit, sprinting across the open field, but he is struck down by a bullet before he can reach safety. The film leaves no survivors from Unit 731; every captive perishes in the failed breakout.

In a stark contrast, the camp’s architect, Shiro Ishii, escapes the horror entirely. He returns to Japan, where his family stages a fake funeral to mask his disappearance. Ishii then strikes a bargain with the United States, trading the knowledge of his biological‑weapon experiments for protection from prosecution. The movie ends with the chilling implication that neither Ishii nor his collaborators ever faced justice, leaving the atrocities of Unit 731 an unpunished scar in history.
