Martha Hoffman’s battle ends not with a dramatic courtroom showdown but with a reluctant compromise. After weeks of protest led by her old friend Bernardo Girves, the asylum doors finally open, but her freedom is still constrained by her daughters, Myriam and Olga, who keep her under house arrest. The court appoints Dr. Leandro Casa Rosas to evaluate whether Martha truly suffers from the alleged frontal‑temporal dementia.

Casa Rosas soon discovers that the psychiatric reports are shaky: the supposed specialist Dr. Narvaja never produced any brain scans, another psychiatrist Gloria Fusco never examined Martha in person, and Martha’s long‑time doctor Dr. Rothman was deliberately excluded. When pressed, Narvaja offers vague answers, and it becomes clear that the diagnosis was fabricated to justify the involuntary commitment. Casa Rosas, growing sympathetic to Martha’s eccentric, independent spirit, even helps her escape briefly to meet friends at an art centre, an act that the court later deems a breach of professional boundaries.

The judge suspends Casa Rosas for over‑stepping, but a mediation session arranges a middle ground: Martha can leave the institution, yet an appointed monitor—ironically, Casa Rosas himself—must oversee her spending, and any sale of her assets requires Myriam’s consent. This arrangement preserves Martha’s personal liberty while satisfying her daughters’ fear of financial loss.

In the final scenes, we see Martha, now eighty‑three, living out the rest of her life on her own terms, surrounded by the free‑spirited friends she cherishes, and eventually passing away peacefully at 104. The ending underscores the film’s core message: a fight for autonomy can win small, pragmatic victories even when the legal system is imperfect.
