What Happens at the End of Eden?

How Eden (2020) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the film’s closing moments the fragile façade of Friedrich’s utopia collapses. After months of living on a strict vegetarian diet, the doctor’s cravings turn violent; he finally gives in and eats a piece of chicken that Dore has given him. The meat is rotten, and Friedrich dies of food poisoning, choking out a curse that he believes Dore has poisoned him on purpose.

The governor of the Galápagos, having received Friedrich’s letter that blamed Heinz Wittmer for the Baroness’s disappearance, arrives on Floreana to investigate. When he questions the surviving residents, Dore, still loyal to her late husband’s version of events, confirms that Heinz was responsible. Margaret Wittmer, however, refuses to accept this account. She points out that Friedrich had survived on vegetables for four years and could not have mistakenly eaten spoiled chicken unless someone handed it to him, emphasizing that she had provided only fresh poultry. Her calm, pragmatic defence suggests that Dore, not Heinz, was the true cause of Friedrich’s death.

With no concrete evidence and a community already bruised by suspicion, the governor departs, leaving the Wittmers to continue their life on the island. Margaret remains on Floreana for the next four decades, raising her children—her son Harry eventually drowning tragically, while her younger son Rolf goes on to found a local tour‑boat business and run a modest hotel. She writes a memoir, Floreana, recounting her side of the story.

Dore, now isolated and disgraced, leaves the island with the governor. She returns to Germany, where she later publishes Satan Came to Floreana, chronicling her disillusionment, and eventually dies from her illness. The bodies of the Baroness and her lover Phillipson are never recovered, and the other missing sailors wash ashore on the barren island of Marchena, where they presumably perished of thirst.

Thus, the film ends with the “ideal” experiment shattered: the ordinary family endures through perseverance, while the lofty dreamers either die, flee, or fade into legend.
