Set in a German barracks just before World War II, the film follows private Asch and gunner Vierbein, opposites in the same unit. Corporal Platzek and the instructors repeatedly harass the clumsy Vierbein, escalating from petty extra duties to brutal punishments. When Asch finally intervenes, he confronts the superiors and the abusive system. Based on Hans Hellmut Kirst’s novel “08/15,” it features Joachim Fuchsberger in his first major role.
