Winter 1942 finds Asch and Vierbein among German soldiers stranded on the Eastern Front. Vierbein befriends Kowalski, yet their squadron commander, Captain Witterer, imposes arbitrary, pointless orders that echo bad habits of his superiors. His capricious orders sap morale, underscore futility of the fight, and once again Vierbein bears the brunt.
