After an Afghan deployment, soldier David Kleinschmidt returns early to his southern Black Forest village, where his girlfriend Kirsten, mother Inge, and admiring eight-year-old half‑brother Benni greet him warmly. Yet the war has altered him; he is withdrawn, his inner turmoil hidden, and no longer the person he once was, loved ones hope he can heal.
