Stranded on Earth for decades, Zygon commander Kritakh as engineer Mike Kirkwood has lost his purpose. His second, Torlakh, who assumes the identity of murderer Bob Calhoun, seeks his recovery. Their plan draws psychiatrist Lauren Anderson, who is first tempted by hidden desires and then forced to face a daunting test.
