Botj, Sean Mununggurr, a troubled natural-born leader freshly released from prison, proposes a risky plan to break into the local store for cigarettes and drags along his friends. Lorrpu, John Sebastian Pilakui, and Milika, Nathan Daniels, hesitate at first and choose to turn back, but Botj persists and descends into petrol sniffing. He makes his way to the Women’s Community Centre, lights a smoke, and the petrol ignites, causing the building to burn to the ground in a sudden, frightening blaze.
The trio soon finds themselves on the wrong side of both black and white law. Determined to help Botj avoid imprisonment, Lorrpu and Milika embark on a harrowing trek with him from their home in north-eastern Arnhem Land through rugged wilderness and treacherous escarpment country toward Darwin, where they intend to plead Botj’s case before Dawu, a Yolngu elder. Along the way they draw on the ancient bush knowledge they learned as boys, combine it with Botj’s street instincts as a natural leader, and gradually gain a deeper sense of themselves and the land they come from. Their journey becomes a test of character, loyalty, and a growing understanding of their responsibilities to their community.
In Darwin, Lorrpu tries to persuade Dawu that Botj has been rehabilitated, but Dawu remains unconvinced. Fearing the prospect of prison, Botj separates from the group and goes in search of his father. He finds him, but his father is so intoxicated that he cannot recognize his own son. The hopes of absolution crumble as Botj slides back into petrol sniffing, and, under its influence, he falls to his death from a bridge. Lorrpu and Milika later recover Botj’s body, bringing an abrupt end to their expedition.
Returning to their original home and their old lives, Lorrpu and Milika must readjust, but the journey leaves a lasting impression. For Lorrpu, the experience marks a rite of passage that earns him the acceptance of his elders, a quiet affirmation of his path forward. The film traces how a group of young men wrestles with law, tradition, risk, and belonging, offering a nuanced portrait of friendship, responsibility, and the land they call home.
