As the movie comes to a close, Beth discovers that her supernatural connection to the Strays is the key to reversing the effects of the epidemic. It turns out that Beth’s ability to turn people into Strays is rooted in her own hidden curse—whenever she makes emotional connections with others, she inadvertently drains their life force, transforming them into mindless zombies. Realizing this, Beth believes she can undo the damage by using her powers and manipulating her dreams. She hopes to turn the Strays back into normal humans before they completely lose their minds.

Beth’s plan is to take pills and sedate herself to enter a dream state where she can confront her evil alter-ego and attempt to reverse the transformation process. When she administers the drugs, she dreams about intervening as her darker self tries to turn Natalie into a Stray, but she can’t stop her, and Natalie escapes. Beth then understands she must embrace her ability rather than fight it—by taking more pills, she allows the infected to retain what she previously absorbed from them, effectively giving back their souls.

In the final moments, Beth is able to restore her father, Derek, and others to their original selves. The epidemic begins to dissolve, and the Strays revert to the living humans they once were. Beth’s understanding of her curse and her willingness to accept her role results in saving the remaining population. The film ends with a sense of hope, emphasizing that the key to healing lies in accepting one’s inner darkness and using it for good, even if it means confronting uncomfortable truths about oneself. Despite the film’s shortcomings, this ending suggests that inner understanding and redemption can bring light to a dark world.
