Early in the 20th‑century Italian actor Guido Guidi, an enthusiastic but untalented thespian, leads his troupe on a Texas tour when the mysterious, wealthy Peppino Garibaldi offers them a lucrative gig: stage “Richard III” in Veracruz, Mexico. Garibaldi’s motives are political, using the performance to aid the Revolution and General Carasco’s raid on the town. When the Mexican army arrives with artillery, Guidi and fellow Italian priest Padre Albino flee, inadvertently rescuing Carasco from a firing squad. The pair then embark on a chaotic odyssey across a war‑torn Mexico, repeatedly falling into the hands of Carasco, rebel leader Herrera, and ruthless bandits.
