In 1961, shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion, a new Cold War crisis looms as Soviet tensions rise in Berlin. The looming threat sets the stakes for the characters and the choices they will make. The backdrop motivates a desperate attempt to stay out of active combat while somehow contributing to national defense.

A motley group of Hollywood actors, writers, stuntmen, makeup artists, and studio personnel volunteer for the California Air National Guard's 73rd, becoming weekend warriors. They hope to keep themselves safely at home while the nation braces for the potential call-up. Vince Tucker, a screenwriter, leads the group and sets the tone for their showbiz approach.

During a base tour, Congressman Ernest W. Balljoy runs afoul of one of their tasteless pranks. Behind the scenes, Balljoy arranges to have them transferred to the isolated Pacific island where the U.S. stores its atomic warheads.
