In the early 1990s, before widespread gentrification reshaped New York City, several young people from diverse and difficult home lives found themselves navigating the harsh realities of the streets. Bound together by a shared passion for skateboarding, they created a close-knit community and forged an unconventional lifestyle. This experience served as the inspiration for the controversial and influential film *Kids*, directed by photographer Larry Clark and released in 1995.
