In 1920s Brazil, the brutal colonel Minas destroys the home of a famed cangaceiro, leaving only a young farmer, Espedito, alive. A hermit rescues him, baptizing him “the Redeemer.” Espedito forms his own cangaceiro band, yet remains unsure of his purpose until a cultured Dutch oil prospector befriends him, introduces him to a corrupt governor and hires him, then abruptly switches sides, thrusting Espedito into a fraught struggle of loyalty and rebellion.
