Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll

Violet Evergarden is sent to a prestigious girls’ boarding school by request of the Drossel royal family to assist one of the students, Isabella York in her training as a debutante. As Isabella York is initially distrustful of Violet, it becomes clear that she finds it difficult to fit in and has little interest in the social skills expected of a debutante. Violet, though stoic, also carries health concerns, often coughing fits that interrupt the daily routine at the school.

Isabella later reveals to Violet that she was Amy Bartlett, an illegitimate child of the York family. She explains she once lived in poverty and had adopted an orphan, Taylor Bartlett as her younger sister. The York family eventually tracked her down and invited her to join the family, promising a better life for Taylor in return. Realizing she cannot properly care for Taylor, Isabella reluctantly accepts. To help Taylor understand her past, Violet is asked to write a letter on her behalf, a task that underscores Violet’s growing role beyond mere accompaniment.

With the letter completed, Violet returns to Leiden. Three years later, Taylor travels to Leiden to find the CH Postal Company and finally meets Violet, expressing a desire to work as a postman. Claudia Hodgins is initially reluctant to hire a child, but allows the arrangement under Violet’s terms, and he assigns Benedict Blue to train Taylor. By shadowing Benedict on his routes, Taylor begins to discover the daily realities behind letters and deliveries, a journey that gradually reshapes her view of communication and care.

During training, Benedict realizes that Taylor cannot read, meaning she would not be able to read addresses on letters. Violet decides to teach Taylor to read and write, turning the delivery job into a path toward empowerment. The next day, Taylor accompanies Violet on a new route, and she voices a clear goal: she wants to become a postman so that she can deliver happiness, just as Benedict once delivered Isabella’s letter to her.

To help her feel connected to the past, Violet assists Taylor in writing a letter to Isabella. Benedict agrees to track her down so he can deliver that message once she is ready. He even obtains a new motorcycle from Hodgins to continue the search, taking Taylor along as they head to find Isabella. When the letter finally reaches its destination, Benedict delivers it, and Taylor decides to wait until she can meet Isabella herself, only after she has earned the status of a true postman.

Ultimately, Taylor is adopted by the Evergarden family, and the bond between Violet and Benedict continues to guide her on her road to delivering letters and, by extension, happiness. The story closes on a note of steady purpose, with Taylor embracing her new life and Violet continuing her work alongside Benedict in Leiden.
