The story follows nine‑year‑old twin brothers growing up in a quiet Japanese village in the years after World War II. Their mother works as a schoolteacher and their father as a civil servant, while they navigate relationships with an elderly landlord, a rough newcomer at school, and encounter three mysterious, elderly‑woman spirits that linger in the countryside. Their everyday lives intertwine with these enigmatic figures, shaping their childhood in a world still healing from war.
