Alain Cluny plays Balthazar, a well‑meaning but clumsy middle‑aged intellectual who habitually lectures his girlfriend about left‑wing causes. His life changes when he meets Edwarda (Bernadette Lafont), an active member of the political underground. She recruits him, and her group stages a mock interrogation that Balthazar believes is conducted by the French secret police. After passing the test, he receives a genuine assignment. The film mixes comedy and satire, using absurd situations to expose the pretensions and humor of left‑wing activism.
