The battle in Tomobiki Town hinges on one phrase: “I love you.” Lum’s grandfather promised that if she were born she’d marry a merchant who now returns to claim his right. Misled into thinking Lum will leave, Ataru angrily says he hates her, sparking conflict. To resolve it, Ataru must tell Lum he loves her, but his pride may doom their happiness.
