A determined newspaper reporter documents the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary. At first he denounces the communist regime, but as the story unfolds he begins to highlight the perceived benefits of the social reforms introduced after the conflict. The “twenty hours” denotes the span he spends interviewing witnesses to the events.
