Shown at Cannes in 1946, the film survives only in a 20‑minute fragment after a fire destroyed the rest. Lídia, a young elementary school teacher, is sent to an isolated mountain village. On her first day, the doctor tells her she must accompany the priest on a three‑day trip—the “godless days” of the title. During that time she meets Paulo Belforte, the feared lord of the hill accused of burning the church and attempting to murder his wife. Misunderstandings turn the villagers against both Lídia and Belforte, culminating in a torchlit procession to cleanse the village’s perceived evil. Ultimately, the conflict resolves and peace returns through a semi‑divine intervention.
