Karla Zachanassian, Ingrid Bergman, a extraordinarily wealthy woman, returns to the decaying village where she grew up. Twenty years earlier, at the age of 17, she was impregnated by the local shopkeeper Serge Miller, who faced a trial in which he denied paternity and bribed two men to testify that they had slept with Karla. This cascade of lies ruined her credibility and ensured that Serge would not be held accountable for the consequences of his actions. Now, with the town’s economy languishing since the factory closed, the once-quiet streets buzz with a new opportunity: the chance to be saved through wealth.
