In 1970s Sydney, working‑class Paul Lawrence sells shirts, dates Cara and dreams of art school. When Cara moves to London, Paul becomes apprentice to designer Marie Rosefield and is drawn into the city’s elite art “set.” He is hired by artist Mark Broniski to design a set for British director John L. Fredericks, aided by fellow student Tony Brown, with whom he begins a secret gay affair. Relationships intertwine as Tony dates Paul’s cousin Kim, whose mother Peggy also has an affair with Broniski.
