She lives in a provincial town, unhappily wed to Bernard, a dull, pompous man who cares only for his family name and estate. They reside in an isolated mansion staffed by servants. Early in the marriage her only solace is the pine forest that drew her, and her affection for Anne, Bernard’s half‑sister. Through flashbacks, the film quietly shows the events that lead to her being charged with poisoning Bernard.
