In post-war Poland, 1945, the Communist Security Service targets perceived enemies, establishing a labor camp on the grounds of the former Nazi concentration camp, Zgoda, or Reconciliation. Franek takes a position as a guard within the camp, hoping to protect Anna, a Polish prisoner he loves. Unbeknownst to him, a German prisoner, Erwin, also harbors feelings for Anna. Franek's involvement with the communist party is driven by a naive belief that he can manipulate the system.
