The Nanny

Susy's drowning leads to Joey being blamed and he is sent away to a school for emotionally disturbed children. The separation marks the start of his long distrust toward the family's nanny. He clings to memories of Susy, convinced the tragedy could have been prevented.

Two years later, Joey returns home, but his suspicion of the nanny remains. He refuses to eat the food she prepares, abandons the room she decorates, and insists on locking his door when he bathes. His parents struggle to manage his fear and hostility.

During a prank, Joey places Bobbie's large doll in a running bath to scare Nanny. Nanny reacts with visible distress and has to lie down, unsettling Virginia, who scolds Joey for cruelty. The incident raises the tension in the home.

Nanny makes steak and kidney pie, but Joey refuses to eat, suspecting poison. Virginia takes a portion and falls violently ill, is hospitalized, and Joey is blamed for the incident. Aunt Pen comes to supervise Virginia in her absence.

During Pen's visit, Joey emerges from the bathroom dripping wet and claims that Nanny tried to drown him. Pen dismisses it as fantasy, maintaining her skepticism. The lack of belief deepens the household's tension.

Pen asks Nanny for her heart medication when she grows short of breath. Nanny delays, and Pen's condition worsens. The family becomes entangled in the nanny's suspected control over events.

Joey sneaks to Bobbie's window and recounts what happened the day Susy died. He explains that Nanny turned on the taps, found Susy in the bathroom, and bathed the body. He recalls how Nanny silenced his cries and tried to place him in the tub with the corpse.

Dr Medman finds Joey in his apartment and returns him downstairs. This intervention briefly reestablishes a fragile routine but cannot end the underlying fear. The shadow of Susy’s death lingers over the household.

That night, Joey barricades himself in his room with a makeshift alarm. Pen wakes to see Nanny outside Joey's door with a pillow and recalls their childhood rule about pillows. The moment makes clear the danger is closer than anyone wants to admit.

Pen dies after a heart attack; Nanny delays her medication while she processes the memory that drives her actions. In the dying moments, Nanny's past trauma surfaces, offering a motive for silencing Susy and Joey. The revelation shakes the family to its core.

After Pen's death, Nanny tries to get into Joey's room. When the alarm sounds, Joey flees, but Nanny grabs him, knocks him out, and places him in a filling bathtub. Confronted with memories of Susy, she breaks down and pulls Joey from the water.

At the hospital, Dr Medman informs Virginia that Nanny is mentally ill and will receive long-term psychiatric care. Virginia tells Joey she knows the truth. Joey, no longer withdrawn or fearful, embraces his mother and begins to feel safe again.
