In the early 1970s, lawyers Otto Schily and Hans‑Christian Ströbele were part of West Germany’s left‑wing extraparliamentary opposition, even defending militant Horst Mahler. They shared a goal of creating a new republic, denouncing the Federal Republic as oppressive and a U.S. vassal. Later, Schily became a conservative interior minister, Ströbele a Green Party Bundestag member, while Mahler re‑entered legal trouble for extremist right‑wing actions.
