He escapes, swears revenge, and embarks on a perilous mission to buy guns abroad and smuggle them home. Returning to a destitute hometown, he finds his mother and brother penniless. While arranging the deal, he falls for nightclub owner Maud Ryan, whose introduction to ruthless gangsters makes love as dangerous as his gun‑running.
