Russ Sheppard takes a teaching job in the small Arctic town to pay off government debt while awaiting a St. Andrews offer. He arrives with coworker Mike and starts navigating the cultural and logistical challenges of teaching in Kugluktuk. The opening days highlight the pressure of responsibilities and a wary dynamic with the students.

In his initial class, Russ meets Inuit students Miranda, Zach, Spring, Roger, and Kyle. The session ends with absences, miscommunications, and a fistfight with Zach. Principal Janace expresses reluctance to punish due to cultural values emphasizing family and community.

Russ and Mike witness a funeral procession for a teen who has taken their own life, the event occurring on the second of the month. The procession underscores the ongoing grief and social crisis in the community. The experience deepens Russ’s sense of responsibility toward his students.

That night, Kyle runs from his home after a confrontation heard nearby, and Spring seeks refuge at Russ’s house pursued by an inebriated Roger. The next day, Russ confronts Roger and dismisses his heartbreak, signaling a fragile moment of resolve amid turmoil. The events reveal the volatility surrounding these teens’ lives.

The following day, Roger dies by suicide after the emotional strain from the earlier events. The tragedy adds to the mounting grief that the community and Russ must navigate. Russ begins to see the personal costs of unresolved trauma in the students’ lives.

While practicing lacrosse in an abandoned cargo container, Russ discovers Kyle sleeping there, highlighting the hardship the teens face. He gives Kyle a key to the school so he can sleep inside and stay close. This act marks the beginning of Russ's hands-on approach to reach the students outside class.

Russ resolves to form a school lacrosse team to give the students belonging and purpose. He initially struggles to recruit players, and Miranda nudges him to recruit Zach and Adam. He visits Zach’s home and discovers alcoholic parents; he offers Zach twenty dollars to join practice and bring friends.

The lacrosse practice begins to show promise and gains momentum. Kyle watches from the sidelines, then joins after he rescues Maggie, a dog he had observed; the act demonstrates his bond with the team and his desire for belonging. The team continues to grow as more students join.

Adam begins attending school and lacrosse practice behind his grandparents’ back due to their trauma and distrust related to residential schools. His participation gradually builds a bridge between generations as the team grows. The tension between families and the school continues to influence attendance.

Miranda organises fundraising through festivals and tournaments to support the team. Adam’s grandparents see him playing, but he stops attending as the momentum slows, and Zach withdraws to focus on his family’s survival. The town’s financial constraints threaten the team’s future.

A sponsor pulls funding, and fundraising falls short of the goal. Miranda petitions the town council for support, but the council initially rebukes her request. Adam’s grandmother then speaks in support of the team, convincing the council to reconsider and grant funding.

Zach is arrested for stealing money to fund his and his brother’s escape to Toronto, and he reveals he will be sent to juvenile detention, leaving Johnny to fend for himself. He hangs himself in his cell that night, shattering the team’s hopes and highlighting the cost of trauma. Miranda confronts Russ as he packs to leave, finding the team mourning in the empty gym.

The team travels to nationals in Toronto, but is outplayed and unable to score. Russ tells them that playing through Zach’s loss is a victory, yet Kyle believes they can still honor Zach by scoring. This moment cements the group's resolve and their camaraderie.

After the season’s trials—from trauma and loss to a fragile victory—the team’s resolve and the town’s response convince Russ to remain in Kugluktuk. He chooses to continue teaching and supporting the students, embracing his role as their mentor and ally.
