Initially directed by André Sauvage and later completed by Léon Poirier after André Citroën’s intervention, the film chronicles the 1931‑32 “Yellow Cruise.” Forty‑two scholars, doctors and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin covered 30 000 km of the Silk Road in tracked vehicles, battling bad weather, rough terrain, mechanical failures and political unrest before reaching Beijing on 12 February 1932. Dissatisfied with the original cut, Citroën bought the film and gave Poirier editing duties, ending Sauvage’s directing career.
