What Happens at the End of The Surrogate?

How The Surrogate (2020) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The ending of The Surrogacy is quite karmic, with justice ultimately catching up to those who tried to manipulate and hurt others. Nora’s plan to eliminate Yeni, Tessa, and Carlos in a bid to seize control of the Huizar family business backfires tragically. Her scheme, which involved orchestrating their deaths and making it look like they had run away, ends in chaos when her accomplices’ actions lead to the accidental death of Arturo’s son, Nico. This heartbreaking loss precipitates Arturo’s suicide and Fernanda’s own suffering, illustrating how their malicious actions have disastrous consequences that ripple through everyone involved.

As Nora’s greed and cruelty are exposed, she faces the repercussions in a profound way. Her physical state deteriorates into a vegetative condition after Luciano reveals he is gay and plans to have children via surrogacy—something Nora’s bigoted mindset cannot accept. Paralyzed but watching everything unfold, Nora is powerless as Luciano dismisses her control, declaring he does not care for the company and instead wants to pursue his passion for soccer. This moment signifies the triumph of authenticity and the breaking of Nora’s discriminatory ambitions.

By the story’s end, things start to settle naturally into a new, more positive order. Yeni and Carlos rekindle their love, and family members like Francesco and Sonia find happiness together. Tessa begins to shed her prejudices and accept Yeni as her mother, while others move on from past struggles. Overall, the series concludes with a sense of reconciliation and hope, showing that despite all the chaos and harm, justice and genuine happiness can prevail. The ending emphasizes that karmic justice is unavoidable and that those who cause suffering may ultimately face the consequences of their actions, even if in unexpected and tragic ways.
