Outwardly a model citizen, Monsieur Victor is a respectable shopkeeper in Toulon with a devoted wife and courteous demeanor. Beneath this façade he is a fence for stolen goods, dealing with hardened criminals. When a partner threatens to expose him, Victor panics, kills the man with a shoemaker’s tool and frames a local cobbler in secret, who is sentenced to ten years’ hard labour; seven years later the escaped cobbler returns, and Victor recognises him.
