After a disastrous birthday party where her father once again disapproved of her fiancé Bruce, Alexandra decides to challenge him by finding the worst possible boyfriend she can. Her plan is to shock her father into reconsidering his stance, making him realize Bruce isn't so bad by comparison. She hires Carlos, a down-on-his-luck waiter, to pose as this terrible boyfriend.

Mr. Hobart is a controlling father who believes none of the men his daughter brings home are good enough for her. The movie establishes that he has dismissed every boyfriend Alexandra has ever introduced to him, including Bruce. At a party, she publicly reveals Bruce's affair with her best friend Dominique, exposing their secret relationship in front of all the guests. After Alexandra races to the airport to stop Carlos from leaving, Mr. Hobart has a change of heart and arranges for the plane to be called back before takeoff. This dramatic reversal shows that Mr. Hobart has recognized Carlos's noble character, specifically his selflessness in trying to protect Alexandra from knowing about Bruce's affair, and wants to give their relationship another chance.

Impressed by Carlos's genuine character, particularly his kindness, integrity, and the way he treated Alexandra, Mr. Hobart decides to put his money where his values are. He invests in Carlos's struggling Mexican restaurant, saving it from closing. This investment represents the father's formal approval of Carlos and his transformation from disapproving patriarch to supportive father-in-law.

Carlos is playing a role as part of the fake boyfriend scheme. Alexandra hired him specifically to be the worst possible boyfriend, a loud, belligerent, and crude character designed to shock her father and his high-society friends.
